American Legion Volunteers to Fly Flags for Veterans Day

It's time to show your colors—the red, white, and blue of our flag, the enduring symbol of freedom and service for the United States. These colors have been official since June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress passed the Flag Act.

These colors have been carried into battlefields, flown over government buildings, schools, and cemeteries across the nation. The meaning behind the colors was assigned in 1782 by the Continental Congress. Secretary Charles Thomson explained:

Red represents valor and bravery, white stands for purity and innocence, and blue symbolizes vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

Flag Care and Education

American Legion members actively maintain the respect and proper handling of the flag. During a workday to repair many flags damaged by wind and weather at Graceland Cemetery, members Gene Williams and Steve Struchen demonstrated the correct way to handle the American flag. LuAnn Jackson read the symbolism behind each fold as they folded the flag carefully.

This respectful handling is repeatedly taught at schools by American Legion members to educate youth and uphold the dignity expected by both citizens and the military when honoring the flag.

Ongoing Efforts for Veterans Day

Thanks to the dedication of the American Legion members and many volunteers, flags will be flown again this weekend to honor Veterans Day.

Author's summary: The American Legion and volunteers renew their commitment annually by flying and caring for flags, preserving their symbolism and respect as a tribute to veterans and the nation’s ideals.
