The new Toyota Hilux has been unveiled, retaining the outgoing platform but featuring fresh styling, a revamped interior, and an electric vehicle (EV) option. After several leaks and a brief teaser campaign, the 9th-generation bakkie debuted officially in Thailand, including a fully electric version, marking about 10 years since the previous model.
The Hilux holds special importance in South Africa, where it first arrived in 1969. It has been the country’s best-selling vehicle for over fifty years and is manufactured locally at Toyota SA Motors’ Prospecton plant in KwaZulu-Natal.
The latest Hilux is built on the outgoing generation’s IMV platform, now enhanced with hydraulic engine mounts and shear-type cabin mounts designed to reduce vibrations and improve ride comfort. Some panels, including the doors and roof, remain the same, and the load bay appears unchanged. The overall dimensions and wheelbase are largely consistent with the previous model.
The most notable design update is at the front, where most variants feature a new honeycomb-style grille inspired by the Corolla Cross and a sharper design for the headlamps.
The new platform gains "hydraulic engine mounts and shear-type cabin mounts to reduce vibrations and enhance ride comfort."
The new Hilux blends proven mechanical foundations with modern design enhancements and an EV variant, continuing its legacy in a refreshed form.
Author's summary: The 9th-generation Toyota Hilux updates a trusted platform with modern styling, improved comfort features, and introduces an electric version, reinforcing its legacy especially in South Africa.
