The New Toyota Hilux Goes Electric—But It Keeps Diesel and Gas Engines

The ninth generation of Toyota’s renowned pickup truck has undergone a complete redesign both inside and out. For the first time, the Hilux joins the electric era with a new battery-powered version, while still retaining its dependable diesel and gas engines.

Trucks generally outlast the usual six-to-seven-year model cycles of cars and SUVs, but even by those standards, the current Hilux has lingered for too long. Originally launched in 2015, it has seen numerous updates and facelifts but remained largely unchanged beneath the surface.

Now, Toyota is giving its durable workhorse a significant overhaul for 2026. Transitioning to the ninth generation introduces substantial innovations, including the brand’s first fully electric Hilux. This BEV-badged model leads the lineup and will officially debut next month.

“These official images have something else in common: they all depict the double-cab Hilux.”

Toyota Europe has decided to discontinue other body styles, citing overwhelming customer preference for the double-cab configuration. However, the single-cab version will remain in production for select markets such as Australia.

Update

New images have been released showing the diesel variant, confirming that traditional engines will continue to be part of the Hilux family.
