CFIA proceeds with ostrich cull after Supreme Court ruling

The Supreme Court of Canada dismissed the last appeal against the order to cull a flock of ostriches at the Universal Ostrich Farm in Edgewood, British Columbia. Following the decision, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed it will continue with the planned depopulation and disposal.

Farm representative expresses determination and frustration

Katie Pasitney, representing the Universal Ostrich Farm, expressed gratitude for global support but vowed to hold responsible agencies accountable. She stated that all recent farm activities have been documented on video and emphasized her commitment to make it her family’s mission to challenge the CFIA.

“I know that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has made a massive amount of mistakes here. They can't follow their own mandate. They can't follow their own policy.”

Pasitney and her family have been contesting the cull order, issued last December, for nearly 10 months. She urged the CFIA to reconsider, calling the situation a "painful moment in history."

“CFIA you can stop, you can be the heroes that everyone deserves. It's a painful moment in history, a painful moment.”

International support and ongoing legal efforts

John Catsimatidis, a U.S. billionaire who funded the farm’s legal defense and rallied international backing, plans to hold a press conference to address the matter further.

CFIA statement

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed it will advance with the cull following the Supreme Court's decision on Thursday morning to reject the appeal.
