The Supreme Court of Canada dismissed the last appeal against the order to cull a flock of ostriches at the Universal Ostrich Farm in Edgewood, British Columbia.
Katie Pasitney, representing the ostrich farm, expressed gratitude for the international support she has received. She declared that holding the involved agencies accountable will become her life’s mission.
"All activity at the farm in recent weeks has been catalogued in video footage and I intend to make it my family's mission to make sure that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is held accountable."
Pasitney criticized the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for numerous errors and failure to adhere to their policies and mandate.
"I know that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has made a massive amount of mistakes here. They can't follow their own mandate. They can't follow their own policy."
The Pasitney family has been contesting the cull order for 10 months since it was issued last December. Despite the Supreme Court ruling, they continue to resist.
"CFIA you can stop, you can be the heroes that everyone deserves. It's a painful moment in history, a painful moment."
John Catsimatidis, a US billionaire who funded the farm’s legal defense and rallied international support to save the ostriches, is scheduled to hold a press conference later today addressing the situation.
Following the Supreme Court’s decision, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed it will proceed with the cull at the Universal Ostrich Farm.
Summary: After the Supreme Court upheld the cull order, the CFIA is moving forward, while the farm's representatives vow to continue fighting and hold authorities accountable for alleged mishandling.
