A matcha shop in Kalamazoo has changed its name to "Matcharía" due to legal pressures from a Chicago business with a similar name.
Yazmine Vargas-Root and Tyler Root, the owners of Matcharía, received a cease-and-desist letter from a Chicago café named Matcha Cita in September.
“It had a lot of meaning to me, and so being forced to change it kind of really — yeah it just broke my heart,"
said Vargas-Root. The couple was given a specific amount of time to change their business' name or face legal action, prompting them to rebrand their matcha shop, which has been open since December 2024.
