The Lakers held a slim two-point lead against the Spurs with just 1.2 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Holding possession, Marcus Smart made a crucial mistake that almost cost Los Angeles the game.
Smart stepped on the end line while attempting an inbound pass to Rui Hachimura, resulting in a turnover and giving the Spurs a chance to regain the ball. Spurs forward Julian Champagnie was then fouled by Lakers’ Jake LaRavia with 0.2 seconds left.
“I couldn't believe it," Smart said. "When I released the ball, they said I stepped over the line. We often see plays where a player’s leg is just past the line but the inbounds pass is still allowed and there’s no call.”
Smart contributed significantly with 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, and was perfect on free throws, making all 10 attempts.
He reflected on the error by saying that if the pass had been clean, the clock would have run out before the Spurs could foul.
Despite a critical error, Marcus Smart’s performance helped the Lakers secure a 118-116 victory, with the player acknowledging his mistake and committing that it "will never happen again."
Marcus Smart admitted a late inbounding mistake nearly cost the Lakers a win, but his strong play and quick recovery helped seal a narrow 118-116 victory over the Spurs.
