The Supreme Court of Canada recently dismissed the final appeal against the order to cull ostriches at the Universal Ostrich Farm in Edgewood, British Columbia.
Katie Pasitney, representing the farm, expressed gratitude for global support and vowed to hold the involved agencies responsible.
"I know that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has made a massive amount of mistakes here. They can't follow their own mandate. They can't follow their own policy."
She stated that recent activities at the farm have been fully documented on video and committed to making it her family’s mission to ensure accountability.
Despite the Supreme Court ruling, Pasitney emphasized that the fight against the cull order, issued last December, is not yet over.
"CFIA you can stop, you can be the heroes that everyone deserves. It's a painful moment in history, a painful moment."
John Catsimatidis, an American billionaire who funded the farm’s legal defense and rallied international backing, plans to hold a press conference soon to address the situation.
Following the court's decision, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed it will proceed with the depopulation of the ostrich flock at the farm.
This case highlights ongoing tensions between regulatory agencies and animal owners, with strong public and legal debate over the CFIA's actions and policies.
Author’s summary: Despite global support and extensive documentation by the farm's family, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is advancing with the ostrich cull after the Supreme Court’s rejection of the final appeal.
