Families living near the intersection of Eton and Sheffield in Birmingham expressed worries about crossing the street safely due to drivers often ignoring stop signs. The area is close to Woodward and West 14 Mile.
Kimberly, a local resident, described the four-way stop as “an accident waiting to happen.”
“People are flying through the intersection and they’re not paying any attention to people around them.”
Residents reported that drivers frequently speed and fail to stop completely, increasing risks for pedestrians, especially children and families.
Local 4 visited the intersection on a weekday morning to observe traffic behavior. While no speeding was recorded, drivers were seen performing slow rolls through the stop signs instead of full stops.
Kimberly shared her experience:
“I try to avoid this intersection if I can, but sometimes you just can’t avoid it.”
The neighborhood has many pedestrians who walk dogs, push strollers, jog, and bike, all vulnerable to inattentive drivers.
The posted speed limit is 25 mph, but Tim, Kimberly’s husband, noted most drivers exceed this limit in the residential area.
“I’ve been passed on Eaton in the residential area doing 25. They’re very dangerous.”
Kimberly also described feeling uneasy when crossing:
“I’m paranoid when I have to cross here. We walk the neighborhood a lot and it scares me.”
The couple suggested that implementing changes could help enhance safety at the intersection.
Author’s summary: Residents fear the Eton and Sheffield intersection is unsafe as drivers often disregard stop signs and speed, putting pedestrians at serious risk.
