Almost 600 customers in Moss Park area without power for 27 hours | CBC News

Power Outage Affects Moss Park Residents for Nearly 30 Hours

Close to 600 customers in the Moss Park area of Toronto have been without power since 8:11 a.m. on Wednesday. Toronto Hydro now expects the outage to be resolved by 3 p.m. on Thursday, extending the blackout to almost 30 hours.

Scope and Cause of the Outage

The power interruption impacts the area ranging from Queen Street E. and Jarvis Street to Parliament Street and Front Street E. Initially, the outage affected over 1,000 customers, with an early restoration estimate set for 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

According to Toronto Hydro spokesperson Brie Davis, the outage resulted from a suspected third-party dig-in at an active construction site, which damaged Hydro’s infrastructure.

“The work that caused the dig-in is unrelated to Toronto Hydro but resulted in damage to our infrastructure. Repairing this damage required our crews to excavate 14 feet underground in order to access the impacted area,” said Davis.

Repair Efforts and Challenges

Crews have worked through the night to fix the damage, but the complexity of the repairs delayed the restoration timeline.

“We understand that being without power for an extended period is disruptive to daily life,” Davis stated. “We sincerely appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while we complete these critical repairs safely.”

Impact on Residents

Sékou Coulibaly, a local resident with a child at home, described the situation as very challenging due to the lack of light, heat, and hot water for over a day.
