The state government of Meghalaya has decided to distribute free sanitary pads in all schools and introduce self-defence training for girls.
Absence of sanitary pads has led to absenteeism and school dropouts among adolescent girls, with an average of 10 days absent per month due to menstrual cycles.
Chief Adviser to the Social Welfare department, Paul Lyngdoh, stated that the government now intends to cover all schools under this programme.
