Deepfakes Pose a Threat to Elected Officials
Arizona politicians are vulnerable to deepfakes, which are realistic fake videos created using AI technology.
A recent example is a six-second video of Gov. Katie Hobbs, where she appears to say,
"I promise if I'm reelected governor, you won't recognize your state by the end of my term."However, the governor never made this statement. The video is a deepfake, developed using generative artificial intelligence and an official portrait of Hobbs taken in 2023.
The voice in the video does not belong to Hobbs, and the smile at the end of the clip is slightly uncanny, making it obvious to those familiar with the governor that the video is fake.
