Advocacy for Accessibility in East Lansing

Alexander "Zander" Bowles, a resident of East Lansing, has been a regular attendee at East Lansing City Council meetings, providing advice on making city facilities more accessible.

Zander's interest in city government began when he attended a city meeting for class credit. He has since become a mainstay at council meetings, advocating for improved accessibility in the city.

Zander has cerebral palsy, a neurological condition that affects movement and posture. As his dad, Ryan Bowles, explains:

“It means his muscles are not working the way ours do, and some of his muscles are constantly firing,”
adding that
“His body is always working harder even though he’s in a wheelchair.”

Zander uses a power wheelchair and a special device to communicate with others, which he has been using for at least 10 years.
