Inside the Alkina Grenache Assembly
Marcus Ellis shares insights from the fifth Grenache Assembly hosted by Barossa winery Alkina Estate, which benchmarked Australian expressions against some of the world's best.
The fifth iteration of the Alkina Grenache Assembly was held on October 16, 2025. Twenty industry professionals, including locals, interstate and international guests, were invited to blind-taste 24 leading examples of grenache from around the globe, across two varietal brackets and one blended.
This event served as a temperature check for the grape, providing an opportunity to gather unvarnished views on how Australian versions stack up against the world’s most celebrated bottlings.
“We always put our wines in blind, and I always feel nervous about it, but you have to be able to do that,” says Amelia Nolan, Alkina’s winemaker and general manager. “Tasting blind is the only way to get the truth.
