A moderate Liberal, Mark Parton, has taken control of one of the party’s weakest branches after the unexpected resignation of its two leaders. This change follows the departure of Leanne Castley and her deputy Jeremy Hanson on Monday.
Ms. Castley, who replaced former leader Elizabeth Lee after the October 2024 election loss, announced the resignations without elaborating on the reasons.
“In the spirit of ensuring a genuine fresh start for the new team, we will not be commenting publicly on the circumstances that have led to this decision.”
The Canberra Liberals have struggled in the political landscape, remaining in opposition for nearly 27 years. They aim to improve and target governing in 2028.
Deborah Morris, noted for her conservatism, takes on the deputy leader role. Mr. Parton emphasized the need for unity within the party to move forward.
“It's vital that we continue to strengthen the cohesion within our party. By encouraging open dialogue, valuing diverse perspectives, and finding common ground, we can reinforce our shared purpose.”
The Canberra Liberals face criticism for being too conservative in the progressive ACT, where they currently have no federal representatives.
