"It's time to leave it behind": Mark Parton's plan to lead unified Liberals to government

Newly elected Canberra Liberals Leader Mark Parton and his deputy, Deborah Morris, have pledged to lead a unified party into the 2028 election. Speaking to journalists after their election to the leadership, both emphasized the need for internal cohesion and focus on public priorities.

“I’m absolutely sick of having conversations about internal party matters because people out in the suburbs are not having those conversations,” Parton said.

He added that his goal, alongside Morris, is to align all nine parliamentary members behind a shared mission to challenge the government at the next election. Parton acknowledged that internal divisions had held the party back but credited former leaders Leanne Castley and Jeremy Hanson for stepping aside to create space for unity.

“In recent months, my party’s been divided by a line that separates people who hang on to baggage and people who let it go — and it’s time to let it go,” he stated.

Known as one of the party’s most effective media performers, Parton has often been viewed as leadership material but previously lacked either the numbers or the will to take on the role.
