Edmonton Oilers' Promising Goalie Prospect Shines in Minors

The Edmonton Oilers have a promising internal option that could enhance their goaltending in the future. Samuel Jonsson, a fifth-round pick from 2022, is making a strong impression during the 2024-25 season.

Playing for Bofors IK in Sweden's HockeyAllsvenskan, the country's second-tier professional league, Jonsson posted impressive numbers—1.88 goals-against average (GAA) and a .922 save percentage (SV%) across 24 games. This standout performance earned him a three-year, entry-level contract with the Oilers in April.

With the Oilers also having signed veteran goalies Matt Tomkins and Connor Ingram, Jonsson started the 2025-26 season in the ECHL, playing for the Fort Wayne Komets. His early results have been exceptional, starting four of seven games and winning all four with three shutouts, boasting a remarkable 1.25 GAA and a .945 SV%.

At just 21 years old, expectations for Jonsson to immediately contribute to the Oilers in the 2025-26 season are modest. However, his strong performances both in Sweden and in the ECHL suggest he has the potential to develop into an NHL-caliber goaltender.

"Jonsson has started four of the Komets’ seven games this season. He’s not only won all four games, but has racked up three shutouts, giving him a sublime 1.25 GAA along with a .945 SV%."

Given this trajectory, Oilers management appears to have a promising goalie prospect within their ranks who could play a key role down the line.

Summary

Samuel Jonsson’s standout performances in Sweden and the ECHL show his potential as a future NHL goalie, offering the Edmonton Oilers an internal solution to strengthen their goaltending depth.
