John Swan, better known as Swanee, is the older brother of famous musician Jimmy Barnes. At 73, Swanee has shared candidly about his past struggles with trauma, drug use, and the challenges of living under the shadow of his more renowned sibling.
Swanee has always been close to his siblings and proud of their achievements. Despite perceptions of rivalry, he never felt threatened by Jimmy's success.
"Not many people touch on it, and I think they're just polite," Swanee said about being overshadowed.
"I didn't really give a stuff, because I got offered the gig before he did," he added, referring to his own early opportunities.
Swanee initially stayed drumming in his band, earning "$25 a week" and unwilling to lose that income. He was surprised by the talent joining Jimmy's band, including Ian Moss and Steve Prestwich.
Six months after Jimmy Barnes formed his band, Swanee joined as a singer. However, he soon realized,
"I'm smart enough to realise that this band doesn't need me."
He decided it was time to move on and later pursued a successful solo career.
Swanee's journey highlights his own significant contributions to music despite living in a famous sibling's shadow.
