Steve Nash recently shared a humorous reflection on the moment he knew his basketball career was over. During his time with the Los Angeles Lakers, injuries and physical limitations had already begun to take their toll, but it was facing Stephen Curry in a preseason game that convinced him it was time to step away.
Speaking on a new episode of Mind the Game with LeBron James, Nash recalled how his experience guarding Curry made him reconsider his future.
“I gotta find out, can I play hurt or what’s the point?”
It was during a preseason matchup between the Lakers and the Golden State Warriors that Nash’s realization took shape. The Warriors dominated the first quarter, outscoring the Lakers 39 to 13, leaving the two-time MVP questioning whether he could still keep up at the highest level.
“I’m guarding Steph,” Nash said. “I couldn’t stop him if I was 100 percent. I’m dragging around, and Steve Kerr is putting me in every action. I’m looking over at Steve like, ‘C’mon, Stevie.’ They’re laughing at me.”
After that game, and a few days of tough reflection, Nash concluded his career had reached its natural end.
“Yeah, I think it’s time.”
That preseason appearance against Golden State effectively marked the end of Nash’s legendary run. In that game, he played one full quarter alongside Kobe Bryant, recording three points, two rebounds, and one assist as the Warriors easily overpowered the Lakers.
