Lithuania: Vilnius Airport temporarily closed after drone sighting

Vilnius Airport Temporarily Closed After Drone Sighting

Vilnius International Airport was briefly closed after a drone was detected on airport grounds. The incident led to airspace restrictions starting around 9:50 a.m. local time, causing minimal disruption to flights.

Details of the Incident

Tadas Vasiliauskas, a representative of Lithuanian Airports, explained the restriction was imposed following the drone sighting. He noted that the situation potentially affected only two flights.

“According to preliminary data, the decision to impose restrictions was made due to the sighting of a drone on the territory of Vilnius Airport,” said Tadas Vasiliauskas.

Ingrida Stragene, spokeswoman for the Public Security Service, confirmed the drone was civilian and remained airborne for about one minute. Despite increased security efforts, neither the drone nor its operator were found.

Previous Similar Event

A similar incident occurred on October 29, when another drone was spotted near Vilnius Airport. However, that sighting did not result in any flight suspensions.

“It was a civilian drone that remained in flight for about a minute,” said Ingrida Stragene regarding this and the recent incident.
