A European airport has halted all operations following reports of drone activity in the vicinity, marking the third such event within two days.
A spokesperson from Vilnius Airport in Lithuania stated:
"Preliminary information indicates that the decision to restrict airspace was made after a drone was detected within the Vilnius Airport area."
Earlier, two major international airports in Belgium were forced to suspend flights because of drone sightings. Brussels Airport announced:
"There are currently no departing or arriving flights at Brussels Airport due to drone sightings around the airport."
A follow-up update noted:
"This disruption has led to delays and some flight cancellations and might still impact flight operations on Wednesday morning."
Brussels' second-largest airport, Charleroi, also temporarily stopped air traffic as a precaution. Initially, flights were rerouted to Liege airport, which later closed following suspected drone activity as well.
"Flight operations across multiple airports have been severely affected by recurring drone sightings."
Drone sightings have caused the suspension of operations at Vilnius, Brussels, Charleroi, and Liege airports, significantly disrupting air travel across parts of Europe.
Author's summary: Repeated drone detections forced the closure of three European airports within days, causing flight cancellations and widespread travel delays.
