Local boards across Auckland have started their new term after inaugurations and the election of chairpersons and deputy chairs for the next three years.
Local board members make decisions about services and facilities such as parks, libraries, and events. They provide leadership to strengthen communities in 21 local board areas.
Their role is distinct from ward councillors, who represent 13 ward areas on the council's Governing Body and make decisions for the Auckland region.
This week, 16 of the 21 local boards have held inaugurations, swearing in their newly elected members for the term ahead.
Mayor Wayne Brown congratulated the members and emphasized the challenges ahead: "This term we will work a bit more closely with our local board colleagues, with more regular get-togethers, and a look at how we structure and function our work."
He noted that most local boards are larger than city or district councils elsewhere in New Zealand, with more people and larger budgets.
Brown added, "It's good the government are finally starting to recognise this."
The mayor's commitment to closer collaboration aims to improve how local boards function and support their communities during this new term.
Author's summary: Auckland's local boards have begun a new term with elected leadership and a focus on enhanced collaboration and community services across the region.
