The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a 300 million-euro (345 million U.S. dollars) loan to Lithuania to finance projects related to defense, according to the Baltic News Service (BNS) on November 7.
Lithuanian Finance Minister Kristupas Vaitiekunas explained that the loan will fund the purchase of dual-use equipment and enhance infrastructure across the navy, air force, army, and emergency services.
"The loan agreement will cover several key areas, including the development of naval, air force and land force infrastructure, logistics, emergency medical services, and the purchase of other equipment," Vaitiekunas said at the signing ceremony in Vilnius.
This deal marks Lithuania as the first European Union member to secure such financing from the EIB since the bank extended its funding criteria in March to include military-related projects.
Earlier in 2025, the EIB approved a 540 million-euro concessional credit line for Lithuania to build the Rudninkai military campus, which will host the incoming German brigade. The project awaits contract finalizations with contractors.
This critical loan strengthens Lithuania’s defense by upgrading military infrastructure and resources via innovative EU financing mechanisms.
