The relationship between the Toronto Maple Leafs and center David Kampf has been steadily declining over the past year and has now reached a breaking point.
For the first time since the 2017–18 season, Kampf did not make the NHL opening night roster out of training camp. After being assigned to the AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, he reportedly refused to report.
According to league sources, David Kampf is suspended without pay by #LeafsForever for leaving their AHL team, and therefore the Leafs are not currently incurring the $1.25 million buried cap charge for him while in the minors.
The Maple Leafs have confirmed that the situation is part of the formal process aimed at reaching an amicable resolution, and the team expects the matter to be resolved soon.
David Kampf’s suspension by the Maple Leafs for failing to join the AHL Marlies highlights internal friction, though both sides hope for a quick resolution.
