Manchester United youngster James Overy has been selected for the Australia national team for this month’s friendlies against Venezuela and Colombia, joining a squad with several new faces.
Socceroos manager Tony Popovic included 11 debutants, with Overy among them after his standout performances at the U20 World Cup.
Overy, turning 18 this weekend, joined Manchester United in summer 2024 on a scholarship before signing a professional contract in July.
Earlier this year, manager Ruben Amorim invited him and other young talents to first-team training ahead of a Premier League match against Chelsea.
Shortly after joining United, Overy suffered an eight-month injury layoff but returned to action with the Under-18s in February, according to the Manchester Evening News.
This season, he has been a regular in Darren Fletcher’s Under-18 squad and also appeared for the Under-21s in Premier League 2 and the National League Cup.
“It’s been really hard for James because obviously he’s made the move from Australia and he’s a terrific lad, first of all,”
His determination and resilience have been key to his ongoing development and rise through the ranks.
James Overy’s swift recovery and strong performances earned him a surprise call-up to Australia’s senior squad, marking a promising start to his international career.
