The taping of Wicked: One Wonderful Night at the Dolby Theatre on September 24 offered audiences a unique glimpse into the magic behind the curtain. While the show featured several standout broadcast moments, including Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s duet of “Happy Days Are Here Again/Get Happy,” many delightful off-camera events were left unseen on TV.
Before filming began, the audience was engaged in learning the choreography for the opening number, “No One Mourns the Wicked.” Fans seated in the orchestra section received faux tulips and were taught the flower choreography from the film. They tossed the tulips in sync with Grande’s entrance as Glinda the Good, rehearsing for several minutes before dancers joined for the final run-through.
The production was recorded out of sequence, capturing complete musical numbers as well as scene-to-scene transitions. This approach helped create the seamless flow fans witnessed on screen.
“Oz may have told us to pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, but at the Dolby Theatre taping, audiences were treated to a rare peek at the magic behind the scenes.”
The event drew a packed house of dedicated Wicked fans, many dressed perfectly for the occasion, who witnessed this unique celebration of the beloved musical.
This special taping showcased not only iconic performances but also audience involvement and behind-the-scenes efforts that made the musical's magic come alive beyond what was broadcast.
