Florida’s Olivier Rioux, standing 7-foot-9, made his highly anticipated debut against North Florida, becoming the tallest player in college basketball history.
With the Gators leading 104-64, a crowd of 10,065 chanted “Oli, Oli, Oli” in support of the 19-year-old Canadian, who had not played since joining in summer 2024. Coach Todd Golden brought Rioux onto the court with just over two minutes left, during the celebration of the 2025 championship banner.
“It felt great. The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful,” said Rioux.
Although Rioux did not score or record a rebound, his entry set a new height record, surpassing Kenny George, who was 7-foot-7 and played at UNC Asheville from 2006 to 2008.
Rioux is also two inches taller than the tallest NBA players in history, Manute Bol and Gheorghe Muresan, both at 7-foot-7. He exceeds former NBA centers Yao Ming, Shawn Bradley, and Tacko Fall by three inches, and stands four inches taller than San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, who is 7-foot-5.
Rioux’s debut marks a historic moment, highlighting his unique stature and the enthusiastic support of the Gators community.
