Victoria's highest court ruled that Tony Mokbel is no longer classified as a "serious drug offender" and will not face extra prison time related to a methamphetamine trafficking operation.
Mokbel, currently on bail, was re-sentenced today for a drug scheme he managed from 2006 to 2007 while evading Australian police in Greece. Originally sentenced in 2012 to 30 years, including a 20-year term for the "Magnum" drug operation, the Court of Appeal today reduced this to time already served.
The Magnum sentence was changed due to the Lawyer X scandal and other convictions being overturned.
This marks another legal victory for Mokbel, who has spent over 6,500 days in custody and is now closer to full freedom. Mokbel was seen kissing his partner passionately after the hearing but declined to comment to the media.
He is expected to return to court later this month for a separate drug-related case.
Tony Mokbel’s legal setbacks have been reduced through appeals linked to the Lawyer X scandal, positioning him closer to release after extensive time in custody.
