Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux resigns from Parliament after floor-crossing rumours

Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux Resigns from Parliament

Conservative Alberta MP Matt Jeneroux announced he will step down from his seat in the House of Commons after several days of speculation that he might cross the floor to join the governing Liberals. The news comes as the Conservative Party faces internal tension following a turbulent week.

According to a letter obtained by the National Post, the Edmonton Riverbend MP informed Conservative Party Whip Chris Warkentin on Thursday of his plan to resign from Parliament at a later, unspecified date.

“It was not an easy decision, but it is, I believe, the right one,” Jeneroux wrote.

Jeneroux, who was first elected in 2015, did not specify the reasons for his resignation. His letter included appreciation for “the many remarkable individuals” across “both sides of the aisle” in the House of Commons. The message made little mention of Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre.

This marks the second resignation from the Conservative caucus in just three days, adding pressure on Poilievre as the party approaches a leadership review scheduled for January.
