Tom Morris, Nine’s chief AFL reporter, has joined Seven after two years working with Nine. According to the Herald Sun, Morris informed Nine of his decision on Friday morning following a lucrative offer from Seven’s head of sport Chris Jones and SEN boss Craig Hutchison.
Morris's passion for both football and cricket reportedly motivated the move, as Seven broadcasts both sports. This transfer continues a trend over the last 18 months in which Seven has successfully recruited several key AFL media personalities from Nine, including Kane Cornes, Caroline Wilson, and Craig Hutchison.
Morris’s contract with Nine officially expires on December 31.
Prior to his time at Nine, Morris was dismissed from Fox Footy, leading to a hiatus from broadcasting. Some viewers have expressed strong negative opinions about him, citing past controversies and personal impressions.
“I will turn him off when Tom Morris appears on screen. I don’t think he is a very nice person given that he had history of controversies.”
“7’s AFL commentary team are getting worse with every passing year. He is the worst AFL journo out there. Their team is getting worse not better.”
There is speculation about the significant number of ex-Nine staff now working at Seven, with some describing the situation as “very incestuous.” However, one comment suggests Seven is not the “worst offender” when it comes to such moves.
“I would love to find out what the percentage of ex Nine staff is on the Seven payroll. It’s all very incestuous (for want of a better word). Seven aren’t even close to the ‘worst offenders.’”
Tom Morris’s switch from Nine to Seven highlights ongoing talent shifts in AFL media, driven by opportunities to cover multiple sports and lucrative contracts, despite divided audience opinions.
