UF’s 7-foot-9 Olivier Rioux makes historic debut, becomes tallest person to play college basketball

UF’s 7-foot-9 Olivier Rioux Makes Historic College Basketball Debut

GAINESVILLE — Olivier Rioux, Florida’s 7-foot-9 forward, made his highly anticipated debut against North Florida, becoming the tallest player ever to compete in college basketball. The game, which ended with a 104-64 win for the Gators, saw a crowd of over 10,000 fans cheering fervently for Rioux.

Historic Milestone

At 19 years old, the Canadian athlete stepped onto the court, breaking the record previously held by 7-foot-7 Kenny George from UNC Asheville (2006-08). Though Rioux did not score or rebound during his brief play, his presence alone marked a significant moment in college sports history.

Fan and Team Response

Near the end of the game, with UF leading 102-61, spectators began chanting “Oli, Oli, Oli,” the nickname given to the tallest teenager in the world and a fan favorite despite not playing since arriving in summer 2024. Coach Todd Golden responded by putting Rioux in the game with just over two minutes left.

“It felt great,” said Rioux. “The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful.”

His teammates, including close friend Micah Handlogten, were thrilled to see Rioux on the floor. Handlogten, who stands 7-foot-1, joked about feeling small next to him and encouraged Rioux to play boldly.

“When he was checking into the game, I kind of stopped him and I was like, ‘Play with confidence,’” Handlogten recalled.

Rioux’s Perspective

Despite the historic nature of his debut and growing campus interest—with many stopping him for photos and autographs—Rioux remained humble.

“It’s another day, I guess,” he said.

His debut marks the beginning of what many hope will be a remarkable collegiate basketball career.

Author’s summary: Olivier Rioux’s debut as the tallest college basketball player marks a historic and inspiring moment, widely celebrated by fans, teammates, and the university community alike.
