The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that First and Last Bakery, LLC, based in Hartford, Connecticut, has issued a recall of three varieties of its tomato sauces due to a potential contamination risk with Clostridium botulinum.
The FDA stated that the tomato sauce was manufactured
“without an approved scheduled process.”Such improper production can allow dangerous toxins to develop, leading to botulism—a severe and potentially fatal foodborne illness.
The affected sauces were sold in 26-fluid-ounce jars with use-by dates marked as September 2026. These products were distributed through Big Y stores in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
Although the FDA initially listed Stop & Shop as a retailer, a spokesperson for the grocery chain told Health that
“it does not sell the recalled items.”
Consumers are urged to return the recalled tomato sauces for a full refund. Those who may have eaten the affected products should watch for symptoms of botulism and seek immediate medical attention if any appear.
