Consumers are advised to dispose of the recalled tomato sauce products immediately as a safety precaution. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) often recalls food items when they pose health risks, such as contamination by harmful bacteria, undeclared allergens, or mislabeling, ensuring public safety by removing such products from circulation.
Recently, the FDA announced a nationwide recall of three tomato sauce varieties from First and Last Bakery, LLC, located in Hartford, Connecticut. The recall was initiated after detecting possible contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacterium that causes botulism, a rare but potentially fatal foodborne illness.
These sauces are packaged in 26-ounce jars with a “use by” date of September 2026.
The recalled sauces were sold at Big Y and Stop & Shop supermarkets in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
"By making sure that the affected items are removed from the stores, the FDA makes sure that the nation’s food supply remains safe."
Botulism is a rare but potentially deadly form of food poisoning.
The FDA's recall of three tomato sauces highlights the importance of vigilance in food safety to prevent botulism, urging consumers to check their pantries for these specific products and discard them immediately.
