Ukrainian lucky loser Vitaliy Sachko secured the biggest victory of his career on Wednesday at the Moselle Open. He defeated World No. 13 Alexander Bublik 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, advancing to his first ATP Tour quarter-final. The 28-year-old did not face a break point in the third set and capitalized on his opportunity in the 12th game of the decider after a two-hour and nine-minute match in Metz.
With his win, he ended Bublik’s hopes of finishing the year inside the Top 10.
Sachko, ranked 186 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, became the first Ukrainian to reach a tour-level quarter-final since Sergiy Stakhovsky in Marseille in 2019.
The American #NextGenATP player has had a breakthrough year, reaching his first ATP Tour final in Beijing last month and the fourth round at ATP Masters 1000 events in Toronto and Shanghai. Matteo Berrettini has reached his fifth quarter-final of the season, all on hard courts.
Alexander Blockx, despite earning a Next Gen Accelerator spot at the ATP 250 event, was unable to join the last eight in Metz. Sachko will face Tabur in the quarter-finals.
Daniel Altmaier progressed after Hugo Gaston retired at the end of the second set. Gaston won the opening set 6-4, but Altmaier claimed the second set 6-0. Altmaier will meet Lorenzo Sonego in the quarter-finals.
Vitaliy Sachko's remarkable run at the Moselle Open highlights his career breakthrough, while emerging young stars continue to make significant strides on the ATP Tour.
