LeBron James is nearing his return to the court as the Los Angeles Lakers continue their strong start to the season. The veteran forward has been sidelined at the beginning of his 23rd NBA campaign due to sciatica, but signs point to a mid-November comeback.
ESPN insider Shams Charania recently shared an update suggesting the Lakers are still aiming for that window. As the team prepares for a five-game road stretch following their home matchup with the Spurs, optimism remains high about James’s timeline.
“I was told today that Lakers personnel are still operating under the belief LeBron James’s debut will be around mid-November,” Charania said on ESPN NBA Countdown. “But this is uncharted territory. He turns 41 next month, he’s in his 23rd NBA season, and that’s why Rob Pelinka’s offseason signings of Jake LaRavia, Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart have been crucial for their depth without LeBron.”
The Lakers have started impressively without their leader, posting a 6–2 record. Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves have taken on major roles in his absence. Dončić has delivered stunning numbers, averaging 41.3 points per game across four outings, while Reaves has contributed 31.1 points per game over seven appearances.
Charania also noted that the next milestone in James’s rehabilitation is participating in full five-on-five practice sessions. For now, James is not expected to travel with the team during the upcoming trip as he continues his recovery regimen.
LeBron James edges closer to a mid-November return as the Lakers thrive early, relying on depth and standout performances from Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves.
