That Luang Festival Boosts Consumption and Tourism in Laos

The annual That Luang festival started in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, marking five days of lively celebration, spiritual devotion, and bustling trade. Running from November 1 to 5, this festival stands as one of the most important cultural events nationwide, merging tradition, commerce, and community in a joyful atmosphere.

Beyond preserving cultural heritage, the festival presents valuable trade opportunities by increasing festive spending and offering new businesses a chance to engage with the large daily crowds.

Opportunities for Local Entrepreneurs

Phoum, a 25-year-old Vientiane resident, shared with Xinhua on Tuesday how the That Luang festival helps people turn ideas into business ventures by reaching many customers quickly. Inspired by friends who earned well from food stalls at last year's festival, he and his friends opened a small stall selling drinks and snacks this year to earn extra income.

"Last year, I watched my friends run food stalls during the festival, and I was amazed at how much they earned in just a few days. It made me realize that even a small business, in a big crowd like this, can grow quickly and reach many people," Phoum said.

The festival thus plays a dual role—preserving Laos's rich cultural traditions and stimulating economic activity through tourism and local commerce.
