The Orioles are set to add free agent outfielder Leody Taveras, according to reports from MLB Trade Rumors. Mike Rodriguez noted that Taveras has reached an agreement with the Orioles, pending a physical examination, although the team has not yet officially announced the signing.
In mid-June, Seattle designated Taveras for assignment. He cleared waivers and was subsequently sent outright to Triple-A Tacoma. Earlier, the Mariners acquired him through a waiver claim from Texas in early May. Taveras elected free agency a few weeks ago.
Taveras spent five major league seasons with the Texas Rangers, making his debut in 2020 in a part-time capacity. While his batting contributions were modest during his first three seasons, he was known for solid center field defense and base running speed.
His role expanded significantly in 2023, appearing in 143 games with 554 plate appearances. That year, he hit 14 home runs, stole 14 bases, and posted a slash line of .266/.312/.421. His performance in 2023 secured him a large role in 2024 despite a decline in hitting.
During the 2024 season, Taveras' hitting dropped, reflected in an 84 wRC+ over 529 plate appearances. However, he recorded a career-high 23 stolen bases, though his batting average fell to .229. He qualified for arbitration before the 2024 season due to his Super Two status.
Taveras and the Rangers agreed to a $4.75 million contract for 2025. Despite luxury tax concerns that sparked trade rumors, Texas retained him. Unfortunately, Taveras struggled offensively, finishing with a .241/.259/ slash line.
