LeBron James did not play against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday. The 40-year-old NBA scoring leader is still recovering from a persistent sciatica problem, delaying his debut for his remarkable 23rd season.
There was encouraging news for both James and Lakers fans as he appears close to full fitness. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Los Angeles Lakers remain confident that James will return around mid-November, matching the timeline mentioned three weeks earlier.
“The Lakers are still operating under the belief that James’s comeback is imminent,”
Charania said on Wednesday’s NBA Countdown, warning that this is “uncharted territory” for a nearly 41-year-old player entering his 23rd NBA season.
Despite James’s absence, the Lakers have performed well, starting the season 6–2 thanks to outstanding play from Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Doncic has exploded offensively, averaging 41.3 points per game across four appearances, while Reaves has contributed 31.1 points per game over seven outings.
These offseason additions have provided crucial depth, helping the Lakers maintain momentum during James’s recovery.
James’s next milestone involves participating in full-contact five-on-five practice sessions. However, he is expected to sit out the Lakers’ upcoming five-game road trip.
LeBron James continues to recover from sciatica, with a likely mid-November return, while the Lakers thrive without him behind Doncic, Reaves, and key new signings.
