Veteran pacer Mohammad Shami faced another setback in his international comeback hopes as he was excluded from the 15-man squad for India's upcoming Test series against South Africa. The two-Test home series is scheduled from November 14 to November 26. The Team India squad for the red-ball matches was announced on November 5.
Rishabh Pant, the keeper-batter, was recalled after recovering from a foot injury. However, Shami, who has taken 15 wickets in three games in the current Ranji Trophy season, was not selected. The 35-year-old claimed seven wickets for Bengal against Uttarakhand and eight wickets against Gujarat, both matches played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Shami last played for India in the Champions Trophy final in March 2025 in the UAE. His most recent T20I appearance was a month earlier, but he hasn’t featured in Test cricket since the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023.
Previously, Shami's Test and T20I records were compared with those of India’s lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah. This analysis focuses on their One-Day International (ODI) figures, matching Shami's stats after 89 ODIs with Bumrah’s at the same mark.
"In 89 ODIs, Bumrah has picked up 149 wickets at an average of 23.55 and an economy rate of 4.59. Of his scalps, 30 have come in 21 matches against Australia at an average of 34.13."
Shami’s continuing domestic performances exhibit his readiness, but his absence from the national Test squad reflects the competition and team strategy considerations at this stage.
Author’s summary: Mohammad Shami’s strong domestic form contrasts with his omission from the Test squad, while Jasprit Bumrah’s impressive ODI record highlights his vital role in India’s bowling attack.
