Aimee Lou Wood On How Her 'White Lotus' Character Helped Her Deal With Body Dysmorphia, 'I Shook..'

Aimee Lou Wood on Overcoming Body Dysmorphia Through Acting

Aimee Lou Wood is an English actress and writer best known for her role in Sex Education, which earned her a BAFTA Television Award for Best Female Comedy Performance. Her career spans stage and screen, including appearances in Film Club, Toxic Town, Daddy Issues, The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, Uncle Vanya, and Living.

Personal Struggles and Acting as Therapy

Aimee revealed that her character Chelsea in The White Lotus helped her cope with body dysmorphia. She explained that by focusing on what Chelsea wanted rather than her own concerns, she found relief from her struggles. Acting provided a safe space for her emotions and healing.

“I shook myself out of it by thinking, 'It’s not about whether Aimee wants to show her body or not – Chelsea does.' Acting has always been a safe place for me to work out my feelings. I think for that reason a role will hit me in the heart, in the gut.”

Mental Health Challenges

Besides body dysmorphia, Aimee has battled bulimia and social anxiety during her teenage years. In early 2025, she was diagnosed with ADHD. Discussing her mental health with Radio Times in September 2025, she shared how acting transformed her mindset and helped her accept that not everyone needs to understand her experience.

“I don’t need everyone to understand me. The people that get me, get me.”

Summary

Aimee Lou Wood credits her acting roles, especially in The White Lotus, with helping her face and manage her mental health challenges by shifting focus from herself to her characters.
