The Baltimore Orioles have been active ahead of MLB Free Agency, which officially started Thursday night. Their busy week began with the announcement of Craig Albernaz as their new manager.
In a surprising move, the Orioles reversed a prior trade with the Chicago Cubs at the trade deadline, reacquiring Andrew Kittredge to strengthen their bullpen. They continued to boost their pitching staff by claiming right-handed pitcher George Soriano off waivers from the Miami Marlins.
Wednesday night saw another addition as the Orioles added a bench player from the Miami Marlins.
Rumors teased by Mike Rodriguez about bringing in veteran outfielder Leody Taveras were confirmed by Jon Heyman. Taveras signed a one-year contract worth $2 million to join the Orioles.
Since making his Major League debut in 2020, Taveras has spent most of his career with the Texas Rangers before finishing the 2025 season with the Seattle Mariners.
Taveras struggled offensively with the Mariners this season, hitting just .174/.198/.272 in 98 plate appearances. Despite this, his defense has generally been above average through his career. His speed and base-stealing ability are expected to add value to the Orioles' bench next season.
The Orioles have quietly but effectively strengthened their roster through managerial change, bullpen enhancements, and the addition of a speedy veteran outfielder to improve depth and defense.
